How to Choose Your Climbing Harness

This guide covers the basics so you can make a confident choice.

Know What Kind of Climbing You're Doing

Before anything else, ask yourself: where am I going to climb?

Gym Climbing
If you climb mainly indoors, gear loops are less of a priority, you don’t need to carry your own quickdraws. Focus on comfort and padding so you can climb longer without discomfort

Outdoor Sport Climbing (Single Pitch & Multi-pitch)
A harness that can carry all the gear you need on the wall, and stays comfortable through a full day in Thailand’s heat and humidity..

First Harness / Beginners
Focus on padding and comfort above everything else. Choose something adjustable and easy to put on.

Women-specific Fit
Women’s harnesses are shaped specifically for female anatomy, a higher rise and wider leg loops that sit properly on the hips for a more comfortable fit.

Kids Getting Started
The standard kids’ harness fits growing bodies. The Full Body version adds extra security for younger or newer climbers.

Understand the Key Features

The Waist Belt
This is where most of your weight is supported in a fall. A wider, well-padded belt distributes force across your hips and is much more comfortable for hanging belays. It should sit on top of your hip bones — not around your waist. If it rides up under your ribs, the harness is too big.

Leg Loops
Fixed leg loops are lighter and simpler — great for sport climbing. Adjustable loops give you flexibility for Thailand’s seasons or sharing gear between climbers.

Gear Loops
Four gear loops is standard for sport climbing. If you’re doing multi-pitch, look for a fifth loop at the back for stashing extra gear.

Belay Loop
The single loop where your belay device and tie-in point connect. The most critical part of the harness structurally. Some performance harnesses use an Infinity Belay Loop that eliminates carabiner shift when hangdogging.

Get the Right Fit

No harness feature matters more than fit. A well-fitted budget harness is safer and more comfortable than a premium harness worn incorrectly.

1. The Waist & Leg Loop Test
Slide your hand into the waist belt and each leg loop, then make a fist. The fit is correct when your fist can’t pull back out easily — but you should still be able to slide a flat hand in without forcing it. Too tight and you can’t get your hand in at all; too loose and your fist slips straight through.

2. The Hang Test
Sit in the harness or have someone lower you. The belt should stay on your hips, not ride up. If it rides up, size down.

Best for Guides, Rental & Shared Use – Momentum 4S

A harness isn’t forever. Even if yours looks and feels fine, follow these guidelines:

Daily use or guiding → Replace every 1–2 years
Climbing a few times a week → Replace every 2–3 years
Occasional climbing → Replace every 5 years, inspect carefully before each use

Always retire your harness immediately if you notice fraying on the tie-in points or belay loop, any damage to buckles or stitching, or if it has taken a severe fall. When in doubt, bring it in — we’d rather help you pick a new harness than have you climb on a compromised one.
